Performance

Performance is used in a wide range offields and has diverse such meanings as "&sbquoimplementation&sbquo" "execution&sbquo" "capability&sbquo" "achievement&sbquo" "musical rendition&sbquo" "acting&sbquo" and "exercise." Apart from these meanings&sbquo it has become a broad conceptual term that even indicates artistic actions and social activities that overturn the existing sense of values. Performing art in particular is distinguished from stage art&sbquo drama art&sbquo and stage performance&sbquo and has become a form of art that transcends them and implicates happenings and events. It is a word that indicates every action that can be a work of art (objet)&sbquo placing value on transience and chance&sbquo from the artistic and religious to even political activities. This trend was accelerated by the advent of video technology that allowed the recording of events on media. As a result&sbquo the mean-ing expanded to include extreme behavioral expressions such as those intended to defy categorization&sbquo and even performances that put one's life at stake emerged as artistic expressions. This diversification wilf perhaps converge into new performances that make full use of computer technology in the future&sbquo but this direction can be deemed as a trend towards unification that inversely reduces diversity&sbquo That is&sbquo in a situation where our physical environment is surrounded by electronic technology&sbquo physical transience and chance will be programmed. Under this situation&sbquo it cannot be denied that objective interest in and expectatfons of performance will be reduced. Then&sbquo wouldn't it be possible to resurrect performances as a new communication format that transcends transience and chance from the viewpoint of performance through design or the design of performance? That could further revitalize performance as physical expression that denies categorization. By employing computer network technology in particular&sbquo it may be possible to incorporate a kind of design that uses artistic methods for achieving drastic or gentle&sbquo safe and peaceful world revolution&sbquo into the act of performance.
