Good Design

This word expresses the superiority of a design. It is used to express judgment as to the evaluation of a design. Accordingly&sbquo "good design" is an evaluative phrase to reward design results and has been used as a systematic vocabulary for design promotion. In order to use "goodness" as a term to consciously and systematically authenticate the relationship between design's essence and social character it is necessary to make objective value judgments as opposed to subjective ones. Using "goodness" as a term that expresses objective evaluation makes it possible to enrich the meaning design contributes to society. Accordingly&sbquo "good design" would serve as terminology in a system of authentication to promote design rather than a political judgment of it. The values at the essence of design always require or demand any design to be good design. Nevertheless&sbquo by building a system of criteria for good design and applying it&sbquo the criteria themselves will lead to itemizing the value content of design so that we can select&sbquo authenticate&sbquo and reward good design. Generally&sbquo good design is defined as design that integrates esthetics&sbquo functionality and satisfaction of purpose. In Japan the main evaluative items systematized as criteria are whether or not the design is esthetic&sbquo superior&sbquo or opens up a new future. Naturally&sbquo the beauty of the design&sbquo namely the design's esthetic nature&sbquo is highly subjective&sbquo and a compilation of the aesthetics of design is being sought. The definition of beauty in good design is a problem that always confronts the design with the question&sbquo "What is beauty created by design?" Ultimately&sbquo by grounding objective judgment in hypothetical criteria&sbquo the term "good design" connotes the issue of good design as establishing the quest for an esthetic nature (arising from socially and temporally shared esthetic judgments) of design value and its very essence.
