Local community

This refers to a society in which certain human relationships are established in a given fixed area. In cases where the focus is placed on the human relationship in the area rather than physical local characteristics&sbquo it may be called a territorial society. Since&sbquo however&sbquo such human relationships have weakened today&sbquo it is rather a society developed within an area embraced by certain characteristics and distinct qualities&sbquo divided physically both regionally and locally. Applying a certain character to a physical area is called "regional development." In the designing and planning process for this development&sbquo the direction for the region as an environment is set and even the ideal state of human relationship as a community that would suit that direction becomes subject to such designing and planning. Recent slogans such as "the era of local regions" and "building our community" can be seen as movements that resist the collapse of human relationship as seen in the territorial society. The local industry is the economic activity of the local community. At one time&sbquo productive activities were established based on human relationships formed by territorial bonds; in fact&sbquo even their profit sharing was based on these territorial bonds. Today&sbquo however&sbquo this mutual relationship between productive activities and consumers has been lost in the environment of urban society in order? to achieve a more enriched living environment there is an increasing social demand today for building a new community through new regional development that extends beyond evoking nostalgic sentiments. The concept "Small is beautiful" advocated by German philosopher E.F. Schumacher in the 1970s may have sparked this demand. Today&sbquo however&sbquo beyond this advocacy&sbquo a new direction for the community is being sought in its relationship with environmental destruction and the network society. This is clearly subject to design. The theme of community as the subject of design centers on whether it is possible to once again design a place for people to gather and live&sbquo that is&sbquo the design of space.
