Fluctuation

In general&sbquo the word yuragi (fluctuation) represents a state of some unsound situation&sbquo in which the foundation of some thing or circumstance is shaky or unstable. From there it came to refer to phenomena that cannot be processed or solved with existing concepts or thoughts within certain frameworks. In the old view of science&sbquo the objective was the systematic formulation of the whole by focusing on a balanced state. Things&sbquo such as noise&sbquo that confuse&sbquo disrupt&sbquo or cause deviation from such a balanced state&sbquo have been considered to obstruct the maintenance of the system. That is&sbquo the values of the scientific system take control or regulation for granted. An active significance or meaning of fluctuation (yuragi) has been sought&sbquo however&sbquo from the scientific perspective of studying imbalance or unbalanced states. What is of particular importance in this&sbquo in my view&sbquo is that the structures of nature&sbquo human beings and technology have been changed completely by the study of fluctuation. In the field of biotechnology in particular&sbquo it has even reached the point that "fluctuation = proof of life." The structural interpretation of order though fluctuation is becoming popular even in areas other than the physical sciences and technology&sbquo such as sociology. It can be said that constructing social feasibility or order through fluctuation is the essential concept of design too. The fact the term "applied art" seems to follow design is perhaps because the phrase "application of art" contains the meaning of embodying the formation of social order through a "sense of fluctuation." In other words&sbquo the essence of design is to create an active sense of imbalance&sbquo that is fluctuation&sbquo as a means to deviate from certain things that are formulated in an age or society.
